MPD Launches School Bus Safety Awareness Campaign

The Montclair Police Department (MPD)Traffic Bureau has been working all summer with the Montclair Board of Education and the New Jersey Department of Highway Traffic Safety to shift its School Bus Safety Awareness Campaign into high gear. The MPD has also partnered with Jason Street of Applegate Farm to host several educational events during September and October. Officers will be at Applegate Farm handing out literature on the dangers and consequences of passing a stopped school bus. While interacting with the customers, they will also be handing out coupons for a free ice cream cone, courtesy of Applegate Farm.

The event dates are:

September 7, September 28, and October 19; 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The program’s purpose is to educate motorists, as well as new drivers approaching entry into the graduated driver program (GDL), about the dangers of passing a stopped school bus with its red lights activated.

Remember: Stop for the red lights.

  • You must stop your vehicle not less than 25 feet from a stopped school bus with flashing red lights when traveling on the same side of the roadway.
  • For the first offense, drivers who violate the law related to passing stopped school buses face fines not less than $100, 15 days in jail, or 15 days of community service or both.
  • Mandatory court appearnace
  • A violation of the law related to passing stopped school buses is a 5 point penalty for each offense.

While conducting enforcement during the past school year, police officers observed an alarmingly high volume of motorists passing stopped school buses actively loading and unloading their young passengers. One officer was issuing as many as three to four summonses each morning during a two-hour period. That's one car every thirty minutes.
