Police Blotter: June 6, 2023 – June 13, 2023

Motor Vehicle Crime

June 7, 2023 (Alexander Avenue): Officers patrolling the area of Alexander Avenue located a Kia Optima with a broken rear passenger side window and a broken steering column. The vehicle was unoccupied with the engine still running. Officers made contact with the owner who was in Newark, NJ and unaware her vehicle had been stolen.

June 7, 2023 (Overlook Road): A 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee was reported stolen from an Overlook Road driveway.

June 8, 2023 (Midland Avenue): The complainant reported his rental car was entered during the overnight hours. His work computer and computer bag were located in the car. There was no reported damage to the vehicle and no other items were missing. The computer was valued at approximately $1500.00.

June 9, 2023 (Upper Mountain Avenue): The resident reported that their 2021 BMW X5 was stolen from the driveway during the overnight hours.

Burglary / Theft

June 9, 2023 (Oxford Street): The resident reported a burglary and theft of a motor vehicle at her residence. The resident reported that their black BMW SUV was just stolen and was last seen east on Oxford St towards Ridgewood Avenue. A dark colored Kia was left running on Walnut Crescent facing Oxford Street. The vehicle was determined to be a stolen vehicle from the NJIT Police Department in Newark. The residents reported that they were sleeping when they heard the alarm system advise that the front door was being opened. As the resident went downstairs, she saw the front door slightly open and three males stealing the BMW X3. The males were described as three black males all between the ages of 18-20, two wearing black hooded sweatshirts, and one wearing a red hooded sweatshirt.

Armed Robbery

June 13, 2023 (Bloomfield Avenue): Officers responded to the Exxon Gas Station on a report of an armed robbery. The victim reported that he was standing inside of the gas attendant vestibule with the sliding door open. He reported three males walked up to the vestibule and one grabbed him by the neck and pointed a silver handgun at him, demanding money. One of the other males then went into the victim’s pockets and grabbed the cash he had from working that night (approximately $120). All three males then left and ran south on Elm Street out of view. The suspects were described as three black males all between the ages of 18-21, all three males were wearing black sweatpants and black hooded sweatshirts, two had black ski masks on and one had a red and black ski mask.

Arrests

June 12, 2023 (Valley Road): A 36-year-old female from Newark was charged with shoplifting from the Acme.

Motor Vehicle Crime

June 14, 2023 (Midland Avenue): The resident reported that his 2019 Audi A5 was stolen from his driveway. After checking his homes surveillance video, he discovered that the vehicle had been taken at 05:14 AM. The surveillance video shows a black SUV stop in front of the residence and a male exit the passenger side of the vehicle and run up the driveway towards the Audi. The suspect entered the driver’s seat of the Audi and fled south on Midland Avenue. The vehicle was unlocked with the key fob inside. The vehicle was recovered in Summit, NJ after being involved in an accident. Five juveniles were taken into custody.

June 16, 2023 (Melrose Place): The resident reported that two unknown males had entered her husband’s vehicle sometime overnight. At 04:50 AM, two unknown suspects are seen on her surveillance camera entering the vehicle and removing a baseball bag that belongs to her son. The suspects are then scared off by the victim’s husband. The suspects got into a white vehicle (unknown make and model) and fled west on Melrose Place. A second resident reported that his Cherokee was entered and a garage door opener was removed.

June 17, 2023 (South Park Street): The victim reported that her 2021 Range Rover was stolen while parked on the street. At the time of the theft, the vehicle contained (2) gold bracelets, a Dewalt fan, a wedge pillow, a dog bed, and other miscellaneous items.

Assault

June 15, 2023 (Bellevue Avenue): Three juveniles reported that they were eating ice cream in the outdoor seating area located on the sidewalk in front of Cold Stone Creamery. While sitting in this area, a male described as a tall white male wearing black leggings with black shorts over them and a black long sleeve shirt, riding a one-wheel electric board rode past them and slapped one of the males in the face. As per the victim and his two friends, the incident was unprovoked and no party involved knew who the suspect was.

Burglary / Attempted Burglary

June 17, 2023 (Greenview Way): The resident reported that he received an alert from his surveillance camera while he was away. Upon viewing the footage, he realized that two individuals attempted to enter his house through the front door, at approximately 05:35 AM.

In viewing the videos, the suspects are both young (late teens to early twenties), thin black males. One suspect was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt (with a white logo on the left breast), green gloves (possibly construction gloves), a face mask, sneakers (neon green marks), and black shorts. The second suspect was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt (with a white t-shirt underneath), black shorts, black leggings, and white sneakers. In the video, the suspect wearing the green gloves, opens the front screen door then attempts to open the main front door, which was locked. It then appears that both suspects walk around the house in an attempt to enter but were unsuccessful.

June 17, 2023 (Summit Avenue): The resident reported that while away on vacation, unknown suspects broke into their home and stole the keys to two of the four vehicles that were parked in their driveway. The suspects appeared to have gained entry through a first-floor window. A BMW M4 and an Audi Q8 were stolen from the scene.

Arrest

June 17, 2023 (Valley Road): A 45-year-old male from Newark was charged with shoplifting from Acme.

Motor Vehicle Crime

June 20, 2023 (Bay Street): The complainant reported that her parked vehicle was entered between 1:00 PM June 15th and 8:00 AM June 16th. The window was reportedly left open. Her wallet containing her driver’s license and $50.00 in cash was stolen. Over the week, similar incidents of entered vehicles during the overnight hours were reported on Greenview Way, Clinton Avenue, Warren Place, Enfield Avenue, and Stonebridge Road.

June 21, 2023 (Elm Street): A 2013 Ford Focus was reported stolen from the area of Elm Street and Elmwood Avenue. The keys were left in the vehicle and it was unlocked.

June 21, 2023 (Glenridge Avenue): The victim reported that she observed an unknown individual enter her 2019 Range Rover. The victim exited her business and began yelling at the suspect who fled on foot east on Glenridge Avenue. The suspect then entered an awaiting Jeep Cherokee and fled east on Glenridge Avenue. The suspect was described as a black male, late teens/early twenties, approximately 5'8”-5'10” tall, slim build, with shoulder length dreadlocks, wearing a white T-shirt and gray jeans.

June 22, 2023 (Overlook Road): The complainant reported that the catalytic converter was stolen off of her 2019 Volkswagen Passat. The theft occurred sometime between June 14th and June 22nd.

June 26, 2023 (Upper Mountain Avenue): The victim reported that he was making Amazon deliveries in his 2017 Audi Q5. He left his vehicle running on the street during one of his deliveries. When he returned, he discovered it driving away. A 2021 Toyota Rav4 had been left in its place. The victim entered the Rav4 and attempted to catch up to his Audi but he quickly lost sight of it. The Toyota Rav4 was determined to have been stolen from West Orange.

June 27, 2023 (Kipps Ridge Street): A 2018 Mercedes Benz was reported stolen during the overnight hours. It was recovered later in the day at Avon Avenue and Irvine Turner Boulevard in Newark.

Theft

June 20, 2023 (Harrison Avenue): The victim reported that he was maintaining his lawn when the battery died on his weed whacker. When he went to retrieve another battery, the weed whacker and electric lawn mower were gone. The Ryobi devices were valued at $650.00.

June 21, 2023 (Bloomfield Avenue): The manager at CVS Pharmacy reported that four males entered the store. One of the males distracted the store employee while the remaining three stole
$1300.00 worth of Olay Facial Cream.

Attempted Burglary

June 23, 2023 (Claremont Avenue): The lone employee of CVS reported that the store was closed and he was in the rear break room when he heard a noise coming from the rear doors. Upon investigating, he observed an individual trying to pry the door open. The individual then fled the area after the employee announced himself. The individual never gained access inside of the warehouse. The suspect was described as approximately 5’'8 in height, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a black book bag. The complainant was unable to see the individuals face or identify whether the individual was a male or female.

Arrest

June 26, 2023 (Valley Road): A 46-year-old female was charged with shoplifting from CVS on Valley Road. She was stopped on Valley Road with 35 items totaling $391.90.
