Household Hazardous Waste
Disposal of HHW as garbage poses a serious hazard to human health and to the environment; N.J. residents are prohibited by law from doing so. All NJ counties (not towns) have set up HHW collection programs.
The Essex County Utilities Authority oversees the HHW Collection Days for all towns in this county, hosted twice each year – spring and fall – in nearby Cedar Grove, a convenient location for Montclair residents.
The drive-in and drop-off collection takes place from 8:30 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. at Essex County Fleet Management (Public Works) 99 W. Bradford Avenue, Cedar Grove, New Jersey 07009. The event is free for Essex County residents only (proof of residency required). Commercial and large quantity users may not drop-off any items. No early arrivals allowed; it is a rain-or-shine event.
