Safe Routes to School

Making the route to schools safer.

Within Montclair’s 6 square miles, the majority of our roads are nestled between homes, neighborhood parks and schools. One doesn’t have to look far to find a school bus or kids wearing backpacks heading to or from school. Between Montclair’s eleven public schools, multiple private schools and Montclair State University some of the most vulnerable road users are our children.

Our Goals Include:

1. Redesigning school zones by adding clearer signage & road marking

2. Reducing school zone speeds to 20 mph

3. Adding both temporary and permanent infrastructure changes to:

  • a. Calm traffic
  • b. Increase both driver and pedestrian's line-of-sight
  • c. Reduce crossing distances for pedestrians

4. Engaging with school communities to identify additional areas of concern
